About LMC Spice Route Project
LMC Spice Route: Connecting Spice Heritage to Global Tourism
The LMC Spice Route project is a strategic initiative under the Lancang Mekong Cooperation (LMC) framework. Our mission is to revive and promote the region ’s rich cultural and culinary heritage through its unique "spices and herbs," elevating them into world-class experiential tourism destinations.
Vision and Origin
While the Lancang-Mekong region (comprising China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Lao PDR) is a primary source of high-value spices, their local stories and geographical origins are often overlooked.
Maejo University and partner organizations, with the generous support of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund, have initiated this project to:
- Raise Global Awareness: Showcase the unique identity of local spices such as Makwaen, Ma-mat, and Huajiao (Sichuan Pepper) ensuring they gain the same prestige as global staples like black pepper or cinnamon.
- Empower Communities: Transform local agricultural resources into vibrant Gastronomy Tourism hubs.
- Link History to the Future: Revitalize the legacy of the "Ancient Spice Routes" through modern, sustainable tourism models..
